# Is Lasagna Vegetarian? (Meat, Rennet & Béchamel)

Lasagna is pasta, meat and cheese in layers, and all three can hide animal products. The meat is
obvious, but the cheese is the sneakier one. Here is how to tell a vegetarian lasagna from the
classic.

> **Key Takeaways**
> - Classic lasagna is not vegetarian: it is layered with a meat ragù (beef or pork).
> - The cheese is often made with animal rennet, so even a "vegetable" lasagna can be non-veg.
> - A vegetarian lasagna drops the meat; a vegan one also swaps the cheese and béchamel.
> - Egg-based pasta sheets are vegetarian but not vegan.

**TL;DR: Classic lasagna is not vegetarian**: it's layered with a meat ragù (beef/pork) and
topped with cheeses usually made with animal rennet. Vegetarian (no-meat) and vegan lasagna
exist.

## What's in lasagna

- **Pasta sheets**: egg-based (vegetarian, not vegan).
- **Meat ragù**: ground beef/pork in tomato sauce (the classic; not vegetarian).
- **Béchamel or ricotta**: dairy.
- **Parmesan / mozzarella**: parmesan is always made with animal rennet; mozzarella may be too.

## The vegetarian version

"Vegetarian lasagna" drops the meat (spinach, mushroom or vegetable layers) but usually still
contains dairy and rennet-based cheese. For **vegan**, the cheese and béchamel are replaced with
plant-based versions and the pasta is egg-free.

## The bottom line

- **Vegetarian?** Spinach/vegetable lasagna, no meat.
- **Vegan?** A dairy-free version with plant cheese and egg-free pasta.
